The String Quintet in C major is the last instrumental work that Schubert composed, two months before his death, in the summer of 1828. It stands out for its unique instrumentation of 2 violins, viola, and 2 cellos. This quintet is perhaps one of the most beautiful chamber music pieces ever written. The two cellos engage in exquisite dialogues, and nothing is more beautiful than the slow movement, with the deep pizzicati in the second cello part and the expansive long chords in the rest of the ensemble. It is surely no coincidence that Schubert wrote this towards the end of his life, and that this movement is often played at moments of farewell.
The three phenomenal string players of the Marigold Trio join forces with none other than Anastasia Feruleva and Floor Le Coultre to perform this remarkable composition.
